NY Night Train Presents: Derv Gordon at TV EYE!
It’s been a hot minute since I did anything for Jonathan Toubin but we are back at it with a NY Night Train Show & Dance event at TV EYE this March. Originally slated to be a Soul Clap Anniversary bash, things had to be rearranged due to a scheduling conflict so this year the event will be from 8pm-midnight-ish instead of the usual all night jamboree. But, in usual fashion, Jonathan went big and is bringing in an iconic performer for the festivities and it’s none other than Derv Gordon of The Equals!
I imagine this will sell out so I would act fast if you haven’t already scooped up a ticket.
This one was a bit tricky for me. I haven’t done many Soul Clap posters over the last couple years and it’s definitely impacted my ability at getting a likeness. So when I finished the poster, I went on some mission the last couple weeks to just draw faces to prove to myself I can still do it. In college I was pretty convinced I would be a political caricaturist for a living but I kind of lost interest in that as time went on so I think when I noticed how much I had lost that ability when I was working on the portrait of Derv Gordon I had a little freak out that I had totally lost the ability to render someone’s face from a photo into a drawing. Which, is probably ok if I think about it. I don’t really draw famous people much anymore or need to know how to turn a portrait into a caricature for a client so there’s no real need to know how to flex that muscle anymore. But I think as I’m getting older and I have these moments where I recognize that I’ve lost some skill I used to have it kind of gets me riled up to work at it again. Funny enough, after all of this, it has kind of renewed my interest in skewering political figures through caricature so I’ll probably start to post some as I feel a bit more confident in my skills again.
